The largest city in Missouri, St. Louis is well recognized as the "Gateway to the West". This independent city hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics in the year 1904. It is home to the St. Louis University, the oldest university in west of the Mississippi, founded in the year 1818.
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial ParkJefferson National Expansion Memorial Park is a major attraction in St. Louis. The most magnificent and splendid feature of the park is the Gateway Arch. The Museum of Westward Expansion and the Old Courthouse are other famous buildings in the park.
Old Cathedral (Basilica of St Louis, King)Constructed in between 1831-4, Old cathedral sits on the site of the first church of St. Louis. It is said that during the fire of 1849, the building remained unharmed. The Old Cathedral Museum besides the cathedral is a great place to learn about the region’s history.
Missouri Botanical GardenAlso known as the Shaw Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the beautiful gardens in Missouri. The garden was setup by Henry Shaw (the businessman and botanist) in the year 1859. It features appealing Rose Garden, Climatron for tropical plants, a Japanese Garden, and an aqua-tunnel. Henry Shaw's garden house (Tower Grove) lies in the southeast of the botanical garden. With the aim to educate and inspire youngsters about horticulture, Doris I. Schnuck Children's Garden has also been established here.
