Despite the many joys of travel, the actual act of traveling can sometimes be frustrating. And lengthy waits at airports are one of the primary causes of stress. While you don’t always have a choice about what airports to use for your travels, choosing facilities that are known for their shorter wait times can help you to shave off valuable minutes from your total travel time — time you’d much rather be spending at the beach or on a sightseeing adventure.
Thankfully, numerous studies have documented which airports are the best and the worst to navigate in a timely manner. The elements these studies take into account include security wait times, check-in line processes, customs operations, and baggage pick-up and drop-off.
Here is a list of the airports with shortest waiting times — and also the longest — in North America for all of these parts of the travel process.
Shortest Wait Times
Booking cheap flights to Florida? You are in luck! Three of the top 10 airports for wait times are located in the Sunshine State. Tampa International (TPA) is the biggest of the three Florida airports on this list, coming in at fourth place on the top ten list.
The number one airport on the list is also located in Florida. Southwest Florida International (RSW) serves the Fort Myers and Naples area, boasting major carriers such as American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and United. The last Florida airport to crack the top ten is Orlando Sanford International (SFB). Although most travelers choose the much bigger Orlando International Airport (MCO) for their travel needs, Sanford International provides a much easier travel experience due to its smaller size.
Coming in at second place on the list of the best airports for wait times is Portland International (PDX). The largest airport in the state of Oregon, PDX is also easily accessible from many areas of southern Washington state. In addition to offering shorter wait times when compared to the national average, PDX also features amenities such as a fast light rail connection to the downtown area and free Wi-Fi services.
Other airports that made the top 10 include Detroit Metro (DTW), Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG), Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) in North Carolina, Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) just outside of Washington, D.C., Nashville International (BNA), and Chicago Midway International (MDW).

Longest Wait Times
On the other side of the equation, you will find airports that are known for their longer than average wait times. Coming in as the worst of the worst is Sangster International (MBJ), located three miles to the east of Montego Bay, Jamaica. MBJ processes approximately 4.4 million passengers per year, making it the largest of the island’s three international airports.
The good news is that the airport is currently in the middle of a significant expansion and renovation that should hopefully ease the congestion, so that’s something to keep in mind when booking your trip to this part of the world. The Caribbean is also home to the second worst airport for wait times with the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana International (PUJ).
Not surprisingly to travelers who regularly use Newark International (EWR) in Newark, New Jersey, this airport just across the Hudson River from New York City takes third place on the list. Rounding out the top five are Daniel K. Inouye International (HNL) in Honolulu on the island of Oahu and Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) in Washington state. The rest of the top ten list is claimed by Toronto Pearson International (YYZ) in Ontario, Canada, Salt Lake City International (SLC) in Utah, Tocumen International (PTY) in Panama City, Panama, South Florida’s Miami International (MIA), and the always congested Mexico City International (MEX).
