What’s so special about a great big hole in the ocean? Well, this isn’t just any aperture. The Great Blue Hole is actually a popular tourist destination in Belize. The large, circular ocean sinkhole is over 1,000 feet wide and 400 feet deep. It’s surrounded by a coral reef and serves as the home to a fascinating variety of marine life.
The Great Blue Hole has been a subject of research for a long time, and scientists now believe that the hole was formed tens of thousands of years ago. Sea levels were much lower then and the hole was formed as the ocean began to rise. It is situated near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll located around 40 miles from the mainland and Belize City. Today, the Great Blue Hole is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
OK, great. But once you’re there, what can you do?
Well, the Great Blue Hole is a popular spot among recreational scuba divers who are drawn in by the clear waters, with visibility of up to 130 feet. Divers can encounter various species of fish, such as the midnight parrotfish, Caribbean reef shark, and other juvenile fish species. Jacques Cousteau, the notable French oceanographer, declared the site as one of the top five scuba diving sites in the world, solidifying the Great Blue Hole’s fame.
Diving at the Great Blue Hole can be challenging and is recommended only for experienced divers due to its depth of over 400 feet. However, with proper training and certification, even amateur divers can explore the shallower portions of the Great Blue Hole. Nonetheless, it is always advisable to seek professional guidance and check local diving regulations before diving to ensure your safety during the dive.
If you’re not a certified scuba diver, don’t worry. There are plenty of other ways to explore the area on your Caribbean vacation. Snorkeling is another great way to see the beauty of the Great Blue Hole without needing to submerge yourself entirely. You’ll still be able to see a variety of marine life, including sea turtles and rays. You can also go kayaking to get up close — but not too close — to the coral formations. Or you could rent a stand-up paddle board to get a workout and enjoy the views.
However, if you are planning a trip to the Great Blue Hole, there are a few things you should keep in mind. The hole is located in a remote area of Belize and it can be difficult to get to. There are a few tour operators that offer trips to the hole, but it is important to book your trip in advance. The weather in Belize can be unpredictable, so it is important to be prepared for rain and wind.
