So, you’re sitting in a café in a major Southeast Asian city. Suddenly, all the other patrons start picking up their tables and chairs and scooting over to one side of the street or the other. Should you snatch up your table and chair and follow suit?

Well, if you happen to be in Hanoi, Vietnam, that would probably be a very good idea. What these other people seem to know that you don’t is that you are all on “Train Street,” and quite literally a train is about to pass by you on this very narrow thoroughfare.

Because Train Street, also known as Hanoi Train Market, is located in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, and is a popular destination for its distinctive and Insta-ready setting. Train Street dates back to the early 20th century, when the French colonial government built a railway line through the area. The railway was originally used to transport goods and materials, but it soon became clear that it could also be used to transport people. As the city of Hanoi grew, so too did the demand for transportation, and Train Street became a popular route for commuters.

Over time, the houses and businesses along Train Street were built right up against the railway line. This created an unusual and potentially dangerous situation, as the trains passed just inches away from the buildings. However, the residents of Train Street have learned to live with the trains, and they have even come to see them as a part of their daily lives.

In recent years, Train Street has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors come from all over the world to see the distinctive sight of trains passing through the middle of a residential street. There are now numerous cafés and shops along Train Street that cater to tourists, and it is not uncommon to see people posing for photos on the railway tracks.

However, the popularity of Train Street has also led to some safety concerns. In 2019, the Hanoi government announced that it would be closing Train Street to tourists due to safety concerns. However, the closure was met with protests from locals and tourists, and the government eventually reversed its decision.

As of 2023, Train Street is still open to tourists. If you are planning to visit Train Street, it is important to be aware of the safety risks involved. Do not stand on the railway tracks, and refrain from taking photos while the train is approaching. Stay aware of your surroundings and watch out for any children you’re traveling with. However, if you are careful and follow the rules, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience.
