There’s a lot more to fishing that just your local river or pond. Remember that around 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. That’s an awful lot of area for any ambitious angler to cover. Fortunately we’ve found some highlights for you, some international must-fish destinations to add to your bucket list.

Our destinations cover a wide swath of the globe, but they all have one thing in common: fabulous fishing. and the sheer range of sizes is just incredible: from cod and salmon, to halibut to tarpon, to marlin and swordfish. There someone here for anglers of all ages and abilities.

So grab your rod and your bait, and head out to one of the following great fishing destinations.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Alaska is an angler’s paradise, and Ketchikan is one of the best places in the entire state for fishing. Although the city is known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” Ketchikan offers whole lot more than just salmon fishing.  You can charter a boat and set out into the North Pacific and reel in some cod, herring, or halibut, or head inland and do some fly fishing for brook and rainbow trout on one of the myriad lakes and rivers that call Alaska home. The various fishing seasons overlap, but run roughly from May to September, so anytime during that annual window should provide you with whatever fishing challenge you’re looking for. Head out during July or August for the best fishing of the year.

Punta Gorda, Belize

Belize is an excellent location for people who like a more isolated fishing experience. Punta Gorda is primarily a fishing village; however, there’s lots of opportunities for non-professionals to get in on the action. The primary focus of the ocean fishing is on permits, a medium-sized shallow-water schooling fish. If you head out to the outer reefs, you’ll usually find plenty of bonefish. But there’s also plenty of fishing to be had in the neighboring rivers, where you’ll be going after snook, jacks, and tarpon. For anyone in your party who’s not and angler, there are also adjacent dive locations where you can view turtles and whale sharks. You’ll find plenty of things to do in the waters of Belize.

Malindi, Kenya

Fishing in Malindi, Kenya is all about the deep sea. Because of its location on the Indian Ocean, just south of the Equator, the town is ideally located for fishing adventure on the high seas, especially if you’re after the biggest of game fish: sailfish, swordfish, striped marlin, blue marlin, and black marlin, to be precise. If you’re looking for the ultimate game-fishing adventure, Kenya may just be the place for you.

And for those of your guests left ashore during your deep-sea adventure, there’s plenty to do on land, particularly if you’re enamored of all things Italian. Yes, that’s right, Italian. Many Italian natives call Malindi their second home, which has given rise to a thriving “Little Italy” on the east coast of Africa. The resort area is teeming with Italian eateries, pizzerias, delis, and gelato shops. Buon appetito!

Patagonia, Argentina and Chile

The Andes, the most extensive mountain range in the world, runs through Chile and Argentina. In Patagonia, these mountains meet the sea, forming a panorama of fjords and glaciers, as well as rivers that are home to some of the world’s best fly-fishing. Countless rivers run through the landscape, carrying rushes of fresh water runoff from the mountain snow. These rivers and positively teeming with fish, including brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, steelhead, Coho salmon, king salmon, and Chinook salmon.

If you’re looking for a genuinely remote fishing experience, head to Tierra del Fuego, the “land of fire,” a large island at the southernmost tip of South America. This wild place is home to massive glaciers, forests of southern beech trees, and rivers full of sea-run brown trout. The best time to fish in Patagonia is usually from November to March.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas is a resort town located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula. For dedicated anglers, Cabo San Lucas is nothing short of paradise. The sheer abundance of fish is one of the town’s most appealing aspects. The crystal Pacific waters feature a large variety of species, including striped marlin, blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo, and many more. Cabo is renowned for its world-class sportfishing, and hosts an annual Marlin fishing contest. No wonder Cabo prides itself as “The Marlin Capital of the World.”
